The Jefferson Biz Markets are an experiment in local economic development.
Susan Kennison, the founder of the Biz Markets, is a member of the
Jefferson County Economic Development Authority. In an effort to draw in
community interest in business, she queried local citizens via a local web forum,
"Shannondale.org", on their business interests and what, if anything we might do
at the community level to spur entrepreneurs. An interesting idea emerged: to launch
a farmers-market style venue for new/home businesses.
In late June of 2008, we set up our first marketplace at the
Mountain Community Center in Harpers Ferry - our present location. The weather was
beautiful and it continued to be kind to us throughout the summer. Local customers strongly
supported the Biz Market all through the season. We started with six vendors
and expanded to a total of more than 25.

What the Biz Market provides is a low-risk way for local entrepreneurs
and artisans to sell without a storefront, learn what works, and hopefully
gain enough know-how, customers, and name-recognition to eventually launch stores of their own.
Our policies are simple: Show up when you wish, bring your own table and chair,
grab a space and sell. The fee to the Biz Market is 10% of that day's sales, capped at $25.
To further support vendors, the Biz Market advertises,
sets up business related workshops, holds special events, and relays to participants any information
on other vending opportunties. The Biz Market also enables vendors to share ideas
on how to be more successful.
